My Google Website From the ACTEaz Workshop

Today I gave a 3 1/2 hour hands-on workshop on teaching with technology, in Tucson, AZ

Looking at the screenshot of my website for the workshop above, you can see the major topics were:

  • Animationish (FableVision Learning)
  • Google websites
  • Jing (TechSmith)
  • Livescribe Pulse smartpen
  • Workspace (eInstruction – comes with the Mobi)

To see the full workshop, along with all the materials presented, you can visit my google website for the workshop. During the workshop I presented with the Mobi, and had the participants often answer questions using the CPS Pulse clickers (eInstruction).   It was really a lot of fun!

If you view the workshop website, to have it make more sense, scroll down on the HOME page to see the schedule and follow the links IN ORDER that are in the schedule.   When you make a google website, the side links are alphabetical, NOT in the order I presented them in!

The workshop was in a computer lab, so each participant was on a laptop.  My 13 (soon to be 14) year old son was my technical helper during the entire workshop, walking around helping anyone who had questions.  He also taught the part of the workshop on Animationish!   He did a fantastic job and I was very grateful to have him with me!  I hope he can help me during my 8 hour workshop I am giving in October!  🙂

My Next Adventure in Teaching

In just a couple weeks I will be down in Tucson, AZ giving a hands-on workshop to teachers and administrators.  They will have full versions of software in a computer lab to play with!

A representative from the AZ Department of Education emailed me and asked me if I would give a workshop this summer on using technology to teach math, and I jumped at the chance!

I, however, did not write up the introduction to my workshop, as you can see below:

I am actually teaching more than the Livescribe Pulse smartpen in my 3 1/2 hours.   I am also going to focus on Animationish (FableVision) and Workspace (eInstruction), along with showing Jing and Google apps.    I hope to have time to share a little about Hyperstudio5 as well!

Hopefully I will see some of you there!

My Activities at ISTE 2010 in Denver

I had a great time at ISTE!  This is the first time I have ever been to a conference and stayed in the vendor area the entire time!

I worked with several companies while I was there.   Every day I spent some time in the eInstruction booth showing folks how I use the Mobi, CPS Pulse student response clickers, ExamView and Workspace in my own classes.   That was very exciting!  I was so busy that I didn’t get any photos of their booth!

I also presented with Jim Marggraff, CEO and founder of the Livescribe Pulse smartpen at a breakfast on Tuesday morning.   It was amazing to meet the man who invented the Leap Pad and the Livescribe Pulse smartpen!  I presented the next day at their poster session as well.

I spent a lot of time in the FableVision Learning booth as well, with my friends Peter and Paul Reynolds and the FableVision Learning staff!   I finally got to meet Peggy Healy Sterns, who created Stationary Studio and The Graph Club (Tom Snyder Productions).  She is currently working on a new project called fab@school with FableVision and Mackiev Software (and other great folks).  Photos and more information about this project if you click on the photo above!

You can see some photos of my adventure on the link below:  It will take you to my Hyperstudio 5 stack on the web.    If you are using a Mac, you need to use Safari, and on a PC, you need to use Internet Explorer (there is a plug-in for Hyperstudio for Safari and Internet Explorer).  I had fun making it!  Be sure to click on the pictures!  Some will take you to other websites and some open videos!  Pretty neat software created by my great friend Roger Wagner (Mackiev Software sells Hyperstudio 5), who spent some time showing me the ins and outs of Hyperstudio AND a chained Bible from the 1500s!  I wish I had a photo of that

CPS Pulse clickers and Workspace – great for immediate feedback!

I spent some time today playing with my eInstruction CPS Pulse (clickers) and the Mobi software called Workspace.   I wanted to create a short “how to” video on getting immediate feedback from your students while teaching a class.    One of the best features is that you don’t have to design the questions ahead of time!  In this video I will show you how to ask any question during class, get immediate feedback of your class as a whole, and then be able to look at more detailed feedback from individual students  at a later time.  You can do this at any point during the class, even when the students are asking questions about the homework!

Maricopa Tech 2010 conference

I had the pleasure of spending yesterday with my colleagues from the Maricopa Community College District at our annual technology conference.   I gave a presentation with another math instructor on how to incorporate technology into our Hybrid courses to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics.   Donna’s introduced the presentation by describing Hybrid models, and gave details on the model she uses at SCC. She then introduced the Livescribe Pulse smartpen, and showed some sample online lessons she has created for her students.

When it was my turn, my main focus was on using technology both during in-class instruction and outside of class to help the students.   I also included theLivescribe Pulse smartpen in my part of the presentation, along with the  eInstruction Mobi and Workspace software.

If you missed it, my presentation was shown on an earlier post.  Here is a link to it

I sat at a table with many of my tech friends.  As we looked around we realized we probably had more tech toys at our table than the rest of the room put together!  One of them took a pic of SOME of the toys we had:

The really funny thing was there were more cell phones in the pile than people at the table!     I’m looking forward to hanging out with my tech friends and colleauges again soon!

Replacing Overheads with Livescribe!

Welcome to the NEW domain for Tech4MathEd!

Welcome to my new “home”

I gave in…I became aware today of the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org

I was using the FREE WordPress.com, but was not able to embed any of the flash based files I wanted to.   So I took the plunge over to WordPress.org and got my own domain for a WordPress blog so NOW I can embed Flash!

I am still trying to decide on a theme, because the theme I was using there isn’t available here.   I also need to straighten up some of the blog postings that got messed up in the transfer, but I WAS able to go ahead and embed EVERY file I had wanted to earlier, including:   Livescribe pencasts, YouTube videos, Prezi presentations, Jing and Camtasia videos!   Deep sigh of relief!  I hope you will join me on the new site for my blog!   I could use some suggestions on the theme, too 🙂

One of the best FREE tech tools – Jing

* I used Jing to crop out a graphic from their website!

Yesterday I finished grading a test that the students did poorly on.   I wanted to show the students that the questions were ALL really covered both in class and on the homework, so I went about making a key to the test using materials from both!  This is where Jing entered the picture…

Jing is an amazing FREE online application that you download to your computer for taking screen shots of part or all of your computer screen. It will also capture video with sound!   I use it all the time when students email me with questions from the homework.  I will open up their HW question on my computer, crop only the portion I want and write the answer on it (Jing allows you to annotate before saving your screen shot!) and then paste that back into my response email to them.  I can even record my voice and send them a link to the recording that has me working out the problem!  Back to the test key…

Well, I was so discouraged yesterday after grading their tests that I

1) scanned in my test key and made a PDF

2) opened up the online homework assignments from that chapter (I use course compass)

3)  opened up ALL the daily in-class lessons from that chapter.   I was able to save every example I did in class because I teach my courses with an eInstruction Mobi, and use their Interwrite Workspace software, which allows me to save my entire lesson for each class!

4) I then proceeded to crop each test question and place them onto a blank document, followed by my written solution, and then followed by EVERY related question cropped out of the homework, in-class lessons and also any online examples that I created.

I don’t think my students will question that every single question on the test was both taught in class and assigned in the homework now!   It at least made ME feel better!

Here is one question from the test key:

The five page test became a twenty-three page online answer key, thanks to Jing!

To download your free copy of Jing, go to http://www.jingproject.com/

I do pay the $15 a year for JingPro, since it lets me record as an .mp4 file and it gets rid of the logo when you record.   Worth every penny!  Especially the free version 🙂

Using InterwriteWorkspace to record a lesson

I wanted to show my students a comparison of graphing a line to graphing a parabola.  I quickly made a video using a Mobi and the Interwrite Workspace, both by eInstruction.  The Interwrite Workspace allowed me to write on graph paper (using the pen on the Mobi) and to record everything I was writing and saying with their “record” tool!    Not only was it a great introduction, but now that it is posted on the web, my students can go back and review it anytime they need to.

The WordPress blog won’t let me embed videos, so here is a link to the video

Students Having FUN with Math!

My great friends at FableVision Learning introduced me to the most FUN program I have ever played with:  Animationish!

If you have read the children’s books “The Dot” or “Ish”, both written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds, then this program will look quite familiar!  In his book, “Ish”, his goal is to teach children they don’t need to worry about drawing perfectly , just something  tree-ish, or boat-ish.  It is a wonderful story with a great message!  I love his illustrations as well!   Back to my point…Peter is also the founder of FableVision, the educational media company that created Animation-ish.   As you might have guessed, the program is used to easily teach children and adults to animate “ishly”.  All the button are whimsically drawn by Peter and the program helps even the most creativity-challenged become very creative!  Just ask my students!

For my Math For Elementary Teachers course, I always have the students write their own story problems.   This past year I took it one step further.  My 13 year old son came to my classes and taught my students to use Animationish.   They were very impressed that a 13 year old could easily teach them how to use it!     Their project was to write a story problem, create a story board, and then animate their story using the Free trail (15 day) of Animationish.  Their projects were AMAZING!!

This is the first time in my 23 years teaching that every single student (without exception) not only did the project, but did an amazing job on it!  Everyone actually earned 100%!   I got their permission to create a website to post their animations on the web.   Check them out!

I would HIGHLY recommend downloading their free trial and playing with it – you will love it, too!  The school my children go to has Animationish on every computer, where teachers use the program to make every subject more fun.   Kids are animating stories they write, math problems, scenes from history, biology cycles, etc.  The only limit is your imagination.
