VISUAL METHOD (Count Sets)

The concept of division can be shown visually using Base Ten Blocks. The visualization used for this example is "Count Sets". Count Sets is preferred when the divisor is large; we then create sets that are a given size and count how many of those sets we have.

VISUAL METHOD (Count Elements)

The concept of division can be shown visually using Base Ten Blocks. The visualization used for this example is "Count Elements". Count Elements is preferred when the divisor is small; we divide the items up equally into a given small number of sets and then see how large each set is. This method will lead directly to the Scaffolding Method (numeric).

SCAFFOLDING METHOD (numeric)

This method helps understand the process of long division. You can "guess" at how many sets can be place, or divided, and remove those from the total until you have found as many as can be divided equally. Adding up all the sets that were placed, gives us the final quotient. Taking larger sets out, especially by place value, leads us to the long division algorithm!
